Hi, I’m sorry to make such a stupid question, but what does the expression „Glück auf!“ mean?
I’m translating a text from Germany into English and if you would be kind enough to answer me, I would be very grateful.
Thank you.
„Glück auf“ (= luck up) is a german miner’s greeting. Wether you meet a miner or call a coal mine by phone – they won’t say „hello“ or „good morning“ but „Glück auf“. The origins of this special term stem from ore mining in the 16th century – as far as I know – whishing luck to find ore and for galleries that dont‘ fall down. It’s used in all mining in Germany. Probably Andreas expresses his compassion for the region he stems of, as there once were hundreds of coal mines at the Ruhr.
